Our client Asfalttikallio Oy is a 100 % Finnish company providing paving and earthworks services throughout Finland. Their operations are executed on a substantial scale, with revenue surpassing €150 million in the fiscal year ending in 2022. During the 2023 season, Asfalttikallio will employ over 600 people.
Asfalttikallio’s services range from small surface coating jobs to large-scale contracts. Their clients include private builders, housing cooperatives, businesses, municipalities, and cities. In addition to paving work, the service offering includes milling and surface heating. Environmental responsibility is a core value for Asfalttikallio, and the company promotes sustainability through, for example, the use of recycled asphalt.
The collaboration between Devikone and Asfalttikallio began with the resolution of several urgent integration needs related to data analytics and reporting. At the same time, a major architectural shift was made by adopting Devikone’s integration platform, which was used to implement the new integrations.
The central idea was to use the integration platform not only for urgent needs but also to gradually dismantle the most critical point-to-point integrations from application-specific code and centralize them on the platform.
With the integration platform, Asfalttikallio’s architecture becomes clearer, integration code more unified, and both the implementation and monitoring responsibilities are handled by a single vendor. Communication between applications is simplified, and the number of requests and data transmissions is reduced, as data is delivered centrally to the platform and then distributed to multiple systems without redundant requests. The platform also enables easy data validation and enrichment using information from other systems, so high-quality and well-prepared datasets can be provided to the target systems. This improves reliability, reduces the number of queries, and even impacts API-related software costs.
The platform also helps reduce manual tasks, automate processes, and enable real-time data transfer between systems. Asfalttikallio uses numerous different systems in its operations, and the platform ensures that customer information entered once is automatically and, if necessary, in real-time available to other systems – always based on the right target systems.
Tuomas Palenius, who was responsible at Devikone for the architectural design and project delivery, describes the collaboration with Asfalttikallio as a pleasant experience:
“The needs are clear, and Asfalttikallio has understood the potential of our platform solution and aims to leverage it wisely. Cooperation with their contacts is flexible – we get the needed initial data and clarifications quickly, which is extremely important for us as implementers to ensure smooth and on-schedule delivery. It's truly a pleasure to collaborate on that basis!”
Asfalttikallio has also been pleased with the service provided by Devikone. Petri Korhonen, responsible for ICT matters at Asfalttikallio, highlights several benefits of the cooperation:
“It’s great to bring clarity to our integration architecture and gain control over the tangled web of various integrations. Our operations require many different systems, and over the long term, system changes are constant. The integration platform gives us flexibility and allows us to respond more easily to the challenges brought by growth and adapt to our evolving needs. As a specialized integration partner, Devikone also brings expert insight and solution models we wouldn’t necessarily think of ourselves. I see a consulting-capable integration partner as a source of significant added value for us.”
Many thanks to Asfalttikallio for being an excellent client – and best of luck for the upcoming season this spring!
